Bundibugyo Ebola outbreak reaches Kenya and Nigeria

As of October 20, the Democratic Republic of the Congo had reported 9,704 confirmed cases and 4,687 deaths across 66 health zones in eight provinces. A trial of 1,137 adults whose melanoma had been surgically removed found that adding the personalised vaccine Intismeran to Keytruda reduced the risk of recurrence or death by 42% compared with immunotherapy alone. In the first human trial of invikafusp alfa, or invika, disease did not progress in 16 of 27 participants receiving the optimal dose, and four had targeted tumours shrink by more than 30%.

Bundibugyo Ebola outbreak reaches Kenya and Nigeria

As of October 20, the Democratic Republic of the Congo had reported 9,704 confirmed cases and 4,687 deaths across 66 health zones in eight provinces. Kenya reported nine cases, including eight known contacts of its first imported patient, while Nigeria confirmed an imported case in Abuja; WHO reported no evidence of wider community transmission in Kenya. [1]

Why it matters

Of the 482 deaths reported since WHO's previous update, 307 occurred in communities rather than treatment centres, highlighting difficulties detecting patients early and getting them into care. Cross-border cases add a need for coordinated surveillance without the travel or trade restrictions WHO advises against. [1]

Key insights

  • Kenya's eight additional cases were all known contacts of the first imported patient, distinguishing a traced transmission cluster from evidence of wider community spread. [1]
  • Nigeria's patient had travelled from Uganda, but investigators were still establishing the full travel history and possible source of exposure. [1]
  • WHO's response priorities include cross-border surveillance, monitoring at points of entry and timely case detection—not restrictions on travel or trade. [1]
