China’s export growth accelerates, widening pressure to rebalance trade

China’s exports increased 36.3% year-on-year in September, accelerating from 25% in August and exceeding economists’ expectations, with semiconductors and autos helping drive shipments. Imports grew 31%, but September’s trade surplus still reached $133.5 billion, taking the January–September total to $938 billion. [7]

Why it matters

Faster Chinese purchases from abroad have not eliminated the trade imbalance: China remains on track to exceed last year’s record surplus while trading partners, including the European Union, press it to rebalance trade. [7]
